Dear 288 Whitmore St residents,
Two pairs of thieves recently opened our mailboxes with a USPS Master Key, which they stole from a Mail Carrier. Fortunately, this time, they were interrupted and only had time to steal from 2 individual mailboxes. We cannot tell which boxes, other than to say they were in the first bank, closest to the lobby door. With at least 2 pairs of people possessing a Master Key, our best defense is to collect our mail every day.
Since this only happens at 288 whitmore, I will forward my mail to the gym building until our mailboxes are moved indoors.
If others in our building have friends at the two other bldgs, that’s the easiest solution until we finally have secure mailboxes.
If there’s further delay from USPS beyond August, I will contact Barbara Lee’s office and ask for help — it’s been months without mail, and that violates federal law. Not our building’s fault, but it’s unacceptable for USPS to drag their feet this long to get this done. While I appreciate USPS delivering mail to the office now and then, it’s simply not sufficient to meet USPS’ legal obligations.
Again, our staff has been exemplary and I very much appreciate the occasional mail delivery under my door . . . but there’s zero excuse for USPS taking months to fix the lock, and then more months to finally agree on where to move the mailboxes so they’re finally secure. This is not a luxury like the pool/hot tub. Some people get prescription meds by mail, I get mail from judges and opposing counsel, and no one accepts the excuse that USPS takes months and months to resolve this problem (actually, it’s been YEARS since USPS was asked to allow us to move our mailboxes indoors).
