Recycling best practices

presented at 2026 Annual Meeting by Joe Johnston Board Secretary

Plastic Bags: Please don’t put recyclables in plastic bags into the recycling bins. The recycling facility doesn’t open the bags. These bags are sent to landfills. Dump out your recyclables into the bin and throw the plastic bag in the Trash.

Shredded Paper: In Oakland, shredded paper should be deposited in the compost (not recycling) bins. It’s important that the shredded paper be contained in a taped or stapled paper bag, so the bits of paper don’t fly out.

Cardboard: Please put greasy pizza boxes into the compost not cardboard. The clean part of the pizza boxes can go into the recycling bin.

Compost: compostable plastic bags are no longer accepted in the compost bin. Please dump your compostables into the green compost bin and put the plastic bag to the Trash bin

Remodeling Debris: Does not belong in the Recycling bins. There are facilities where you can bring the debris or schedule a bulky item pick-up either directly with Waste Management or coordinate with Charles.

If you are locked out of your apartment after work hours you may call Joe at 510 626-0767 who may be able to help you if a copy of the keys to your unit is kept in the office.
